Spencer Goins

Spencer Goins (Deceased) - Spencer comes to the Smyth County Jam from Dunlap, TN near Chattanooga. He is the father of Meredith Goins who has visited the jam a number of times. He plays mostly guitar, but some mandolin. He has been playing since around 1968. Spencer played in college with "The Tennesseans". They played at “Six Flags Over Georgia”. He was also in the Ed Brown Band for a number of years. Spencer taught Special Education for nine years and has been the Technical Co-coordinator for the school system for thirty years. He says his grandmother played and taught piano and a great aunt played and taught violin. Not only does he have the very talented Meredith playing music, his son Forrest, plays dobro. Spencer says he enjoys the music of JD Crowe. We will welcome him back whenever he can visit the Smyth County Jam.

Spencer passed away on Thursday, February 4, 2016. Spencer was a resident of Dunlap, Tennessee at the time of his passing. He was married to Elizabeth. Funeral services will be held Sunday 2:00 p.m. CST in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Cemetery. Arrangements by Standefer-Reed Funeral Home 50 May Road Dunlap. Visitation will be Saturday 2:00-8:00 p.m. CST with a Masonic Service following at 8:00 p.m. in the chapel.
