Gene Boyd (1927-2016)

Gene C. Boyd "The Fiddling Barber" Gene C. Boyd "The Fiddling Barber", age 88, of Bristol, Va. went to be with The Lord on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at the Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born October 26, 1927 in Hickory Tree, Tennessee, a son of the late John and Rose Greene Boyd. Gene was a lifelong resident of, and contributor to, the Bristol area. He was the owner and operator of Star Barber Shop, where he spent as much time sharing his music and fellowshipping with local musicians, as he did cutting hair. Gene was a true gift to his community, with an unparalleled dedication to local bluegrass events and especially in helping and encouraging young musicians to be successful. His efforts, in such, were instrumental in forming the Bristol Rhythm and Roots festival. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having faithfully served his country in World War II. The beloved "Fiddling Barber" will be greatly missed but always remembered by the many whose lives he touched. Mr. Boyd is preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers. He is survived by his loving wife, Jerlis Cook Boyd; step son, Steve Cook; special sons, Bobby Love and wife Gloria, Bruce Cross and wife Dewanna; sister, Virginia Duncan; five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Mr. Boyd will be held 7 p.m., Thursday, January 28, 2016 at Fellowship Chapel with Pastor Scott Price officiating. The family will receive friends, prior to the service, from 4 until 6:45 p.m. Thursday, at the church. The committal service and interment will be held 2:30 p.m. Friday in the Mountain Home National Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Bristol VFW Honor Guard. Honorary pallbearers will be all Gene's Musician Friends, Doctors, Nurses and Staff of Bristol Regional Medical Center. Online condolences may be registered at www.weaverfuneralhome.net.
